To: The Class of 2019
From: Dr. Steven Poole, Principal and Mrs. Jennifer Coppens, Asst. Principal
Subject: Commencement May 29, 2019
Members of the Class of 2019 Commencement Committee have worked throughout much of the school year planning this year’s graduation ceremony. These students are: Paige Messick, Safiyyah Khan, Adeline McCarty, Chloe Welch, Emilio Cuellar, and Nick Bloom. A thanks goes out to these individuals!
The Commencement ceremony is traditionally a serious one intended to recognize the culmination of your academic achievements prior to going to college, into the world of work, or into the military. The ceremony is for you, but it is also important to your family and friends who will share in celebrating your success. Your cooperation will make Commencement a positive, memorable, and dignified experience. The Class of 2019 will be the 49th class to graduate from DHS which makes you part of a very special tradition!
Timeline and Details
Immediately - Report any Chromebook damage or loss to the Media Center. If you owe any fines - pay them.
Friday, May 17th - All online course work is completed.
Senior English classes will take their students to the loft (parking lot side) to clean and turn in their Chromebooks, Chargers, door security ID badges, pay any fines, and pick up their cap and gown package. This includes:
Cap, gown and tassel. Ceremony tickets (6) will also be in the Commencement package.
Honor medallion if you earned one (Suma Cum Laude = 4.50 GPA +, gold ribbon; Magna Cum Laude = 4.20 – 4.49 GPA, white ribbon; Cum Laude = 3.80 – 4.19 GPA, green ribbon).
IB stoles and NHS honor cords will be distributed on May 17 with cap and gowns.
The cap, gown and tassel as well as the corresponding honor medallions and IB/NHS recognitions are expected to be worn in the Commencement ceremony. No other adornments are permitted.
See Mr. Moore in the Main Office if you do not have a cap and gown or if something is incorrect with anything in your package.
If you have books, uniforms, Chromebooks or any other materials that have not been returned (all four years), your cap and gown and/or your diploma will be held until items are returned or fines paid.
Dow Diamond is handling the ticketing. Each student will receive 6 assigned seats in the seating bowl. Tickets will indicate section and row just as they do for a Loons game. These tickets will be transferable to the Dow HS Gold Gym for general seating should the ceremony be held inside due to inclement weather.
If students need more than six tickets for reserved seating, they should get them from students who are not using all six of theirs. Seating for people with disabilities will be readily available.
Any family with members in need of handicap or special seating need to take the appropriate amount of tickets to guest services at Dow Diamond and exchange them.
Dow Diamond will open the rest of their seating and standing areas in the outfield to the general public who will not need a ticket. If the ceremony is moved to Dow HS, EVERYONE will need a ticket.
Tuesday, May 21 - The last day to complete courses for credit to be granted toward participation in the
Commencement ceremony. If a final exam needs to be taken due to an attendance violation or because a student needs the score in order to earn credit in a class, this is the last day to do so unless other arrangements have been made.
This is also the last day for teachers to inform the counselors AND parents if a senior will fail his/her class. If this is an issue for you, please be sure to communicate with your teacher(s) to be sure everything is taken care of. If in doubt of anything, please see your counselor as soon as possible.
Wednesday, May 22- Last day of classes for seniors. This is a full day of classes and for some, IB/AP testing. Be sure everything is cleaned out of your locker, and books and materials are returned to the appropriate place. DO NOT leave anything in any locker. Athletic uniforms will also need to be turned in, likely at a later date. This is your responsibility.
